Montezuma's Well Plant Walk

Discover the tranquility of a site still considered sacred by many local tribes. The shaded forest along the trail near the swallet ruin and the outlet provides welcome relief from the unrelenting Arizona sunshine. The temperature difference at the outlet can be up to 20 degrees cooler than along the rim of the Well, making it easy to imagine the people of the Sinagua culture spending the hot summer days in this tranquil setting.

This plant walk will require you to be able to climb and descend many stone steps in order to experience the diversity of the plant life at the top of the cliff and down inside the well or near the river. This is a unique area where four bio-regions converge to offer an abundance of vegetation from many different areas.

We offer a variety of walks in different areas of Arizona and each herb walk is held in a different location in order to introduce you to plants that are unique to the varying terrain of our desert. Attend all of the walks to discover the various adaptations of plants and the differing species based on locale.
